Camel brand has an interesting history too. Camel Cigarettes were created by the one known as Richard Reynolds, the founder of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Richard always wanted to create something special and new. Till then people preferred to roll their own cigarettes, pre-rolled cigarettes were not so successful. Richard Reynolds wanted to introduce a pre-packaged cigarette brand which is more appealing than any other available cigarette brand. The brand he launched was a huge success; 425 million packs of Camel cigarettes were sold within a year of its launch.

Camel cigarettes have sponsored many motor racing events. They were the title sponsors for the popular IMSA auto racing series from 1972 to 1993; the racing series was called Camel GT. Camel also sponsored many F1 teams too. From 1987 to 1991, Camel sponsored the Lotus Formula One team; and in the nineties, Camel sponsored the Benetton Formula One team and the Williams F1 team until 1993, Camel's last year as a sponsor in Formula One.

Camel brand had new and novel means of marketing their cigarettes. Camel cigarettes were distributed for free during World War I and World War II. They started using the 'Joe Camel' as their symbol since 1987, which had become a familiar character among children. The company also used eye-catching slogans in their advertisements like "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", that created some kind of temptation in the minds of their customers.
